Wyoming Bird Checklist
This is a revision of the 1995 revision published by Wyoming Game and Fish Department. It includes additional species observed and documented in Wyoming and American Ornithologists' Union-sanctioned name changes and changes in ornithological order. "NA" means official additional information was not available as of June 2002. The updates are courtesy of Robert and Jane Dorn. For species whose names have changed since the publication of some popular field guides, former names are noted.
Seasonal Status
R = Resident – species that inhabit Wyoming year-round.
S = Summer Resident – species that inhabit Wyoming during the summer (June-August) and migrate out of the state during the winter.
M = Migrant – species found in Wyoming only during spring and/or fall migration.
W = Winter Resident – species that inhabit Wyoming during the winter, but are absent during the summer.
A = Accidental – A species with accidental occurrence. Their normal range does not include Wyoming.
Abundance
1 = Rare – species that occupies only a small percentage of the preferred habitat within its range or is found throughout its range in extremely low densities. The species is seldom encountered on surveys.
2 = Uncommon – species is common only in limited areas within its range or is found throughout its range in relatively low densities. Intensive surveying is usually required to locate it.
3 = Common – species inhabits much of the preferred habitat within its range. The species is usually encountered on surveys.
4 = Abundant – species inhabits much of the preferred habitat within its range. The species is encountered on surveys.
5 = Unknown – insufficient information is available to determine abundance. Species are difficult to observe without specialized survey techniques.
6 = Controlled – a species whose abundance depends on artificial propagation and stocking.
Habitat Types
FO = Coniferous and Deciduous Forests – found in combination or single species stands. Conifers include pine, fir and spruce while deciduous species include aspen.
SH = Shrubland – areas dominated by one or more of the following: sagebrush, bitterbrush, mountain mahogany, chokecherry, serviceberry, greasewood and/or juniper.
RI = Riparian Areas – areas bordering streams, lakes and rivers. Characteristic vegetation includes cottonwood, spruce/fir, willow and tall grasses.
PR = Prairie – open expanses of grasslands east of the Rocky Mountains dominated by blue grama, buffalo grass, wheatgrass, bluestem and silver sagebrush.
ME = Meadows – includes wet-moist meadows and wet-moist meadow grasslands.
WL = Wetlands – areas where water is present most of the time. Includes marshes, lakes and rivers. Vegetation includes cattails, rushes, sedges and willows.
AG = Agricultural Areas – areas which are used intensively to produce grain, forage, livestock, etc. Includes pasture, croplands and irrigated native meadows. May include shelterbelts.
SF = Special Features – areas having unique characteristics such as rock outcrops, caves, cliffs, shorelines, buildings, mines, roadsides, burns, logging, etc.
Regions
++++++ = species observed in these regions, listed in order: NW, NC, NE, SW, SC, SE.
0 = species has no records of observations in particular region.
